TagsObject Technology A Manageru2019s Guide   [edit]

A Manager’s GuideThe first edition set a standard of excellence that has eluded all followers, and I have recommended it to my clients for years. The new edition is a gift to the field and should be required reading for all managers. — Adrian J. Bowles, Ph.D., Vice President, Giga Information Group. One of the most readable introductions you will find. The new edition offers vital insights into the effective use of objects in business. — Chris Stone, President , Object Management Group. The first edition of Object Technology: A Manager's Guide is widely viewed as the classic introduction to this powerful computing concept. Object technology offers increased agility, significant time-to-market reduction, and the opportunity to exploit the potential of the World Wide Web by deploying globally distributed business systems. At a time when many of the world's largest companies are making the transition to object technology, David Taylor has updated his book to address the important issues facing the growth of object technology and to provide a glimpse into the future of this evolving paradigm. In updating this seminal work, David Taylor has retained the signature conciseness and clarity of discussion that made the first edition a best-seller. Object Technology: A Manager's Guide, Second Edition, covers the key terms, emerging concepts, and useful applications of objects. Managers, salespeople, engineers, software developers — anyone interested in understanding or implementing object technology — will find this a lucid introduction to the topic. Highlights of this new edition include: an explanation of how to use objects to create evolutionary software that rapidly adapts to changing business conditions, eliminating the need for most new application development; an introduction to Java, and an explanation of how its use of message interfaces enables a new generation of portable, mix-and-match, Internet-enabled business objects; an update on the state of object databases and extended relational databases, with guidelines for combining the two for optimal information storage; and an introduction to the new generation of object engines and how they combine storage and execution capabilities for maximum software integration.

TagsBluetooth Revealed The Insiders Guide   [edit]

The Bluetooth specification, which describes a way for electronic devices to communicate with one another at close range by way of radio signals, has great potential. The open standard promises to make mobile telephones, personal organizers, and digital cameras wireless and far easier to use. In Bluetooth Revealed, a couple of experts who helped hammer out the Bluetooth specification (version 1.0B, specifically) take a shot at elaborating upon the contents of the standards documents. They also share some of their imaginings about how Bluetooth connectivity might be put to use. The result of their efforts is a surprisingly readable book that should fit the needs of hardware and software developers who plan to support the Bluetooth platform. After some discussion of wireless devices and the generalities of the Bluetooth specification, the authors approach their subject in progressively greater detail, defining terms and referring to conceptual diagrams as they go. Emphasizing protocols that are unique to Bluetooth communication (such as RFCOMM, which allows applications to treat a radio link just like a hard-wired serial port), the authors show exactly how Bluetooth devices arrange themselves into wireless networks. Then, they explain how these networked devices exchange commands, files, and multimedia streams. They give fair hearing to the specification's shortcomings, too; noting, for example, that it's good for sharing voice signals among devices, but not so good for shar Read more...

* Accessible, yet comprehensive introduction to parsing techniques helps readers to quickly gain a broad understanding of subject * Summarizes more than 700 papers referenced in the book, saving readers countless hours * Many exercises include hints and partial solutions, making it ideal for self-study or classroom use * Extensive bibliography, as well as annotated bibliography on the website, to help interested readers to find more information Parsing, also referred to as syntax analysis, has been and continues to be an essential part of computer science and linguistics. Today, parsing is also applied in other disciplines; some examples are document preparation and conversion, chemical formulae typesetting, and chromosome recognition. In addition to the traditional parsing techniques, this second edition presents new developments and discoveries: generalized deterministic parsing, linear-time substring parsing, parallel parsing, parsing as intersection, non-canonical methods, non-Chomsky systems, and many more. Parsing techniques provide a solid basis for compiler construction and linguistics, and contribute to all existing software: they enable Web browsers to analyze HTML pages and PostScript printers to analyze PostScript, and some of the more advanced techniques are used in code generation in compilers and in data compression. Also their importance as general pattern recognizers is slowly being acknowledged. To provide readers with low-threshold access to Read more...

TagsMATLAB Guide   [edit]

Review I use the Higham brothers' MATLAB Guide as a reference for myself and my students in all my applied mathematics and computational science courses. The clarity and usefulness of their writing are major attractions for using their books. Consequently, I look forward to the very much improved second edition, as if that were possible for a much admired book. In particular, the new chapter on case studies looks quite interesting with its useful applications. In addition, new treatments of new functions and features like nested functions, ODE as well as DDE functions will be of great interest. Floyd B. Hanson, Ph.D., Professor of Mathematics, Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, University of Illinois at Chicago MATLAB Guide is an excellent reference book for MATLAB programming. This new version of MATLAB Guide contains material on important changes introduced in MATLAB 7, including single precision arithmetic and anonymous and nested functions. The new edition also contains many more examples; readers will have the advantage of learning MATLAB by essentially looking over the shoulder of two experts. This is a book that all users, new and experienced, will find valuable. James Nagy, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, Emory University MATLAB Guide, Second Edition, is my new favorite MATLAB reference because it not only teaches MATLAB, it fosters a love for all things related to scientific computation. TagsA Beginners Guide to Mathematica   [edit]

Because of its large command structure and intricate syntax, Mathematica can be difficult to learn. Wolfram's Mathematica manual, while certainly comprehensive, is so large and complex that when trying to learn the software from scratch -- or find answers to specific questions -- one can be quickly overwhelmed. A Beginner's Guide to Mathematica offers a simple, step-by-step approach to help math-savvy newcomers build the skills needed to use the software in practice. Concise and easy to use, this book teaches by example and points out potential pitfalls along the way. The presentation starts with simple problems and discusses multiple solution paths, ranging from basic to elegant, to gradually introduce the Mathematica toolkit. More challenging and eventually cutting-edge problems follow. The authors place high value on notebook and file system organization, cross-platform capabilities, and data reading and writing. The text features an array of error messages you will likely encounter and clearly describes how to deal with those situations. While it is by no means exhaustive, this book offers a non-threatening introduction to Mathematica that will teach you the aspects needed for many practical applications, get you started on performing specific, relatively simple tasks, and enable you to build on this experience and move on to more real-world problems. TagsARM System Developers Guide Designing   [edit]

Over the last ten years, the ARM architecture has become one of the most pervasive architectures in the world, with more than 2 billion ARM-based processors embedded in products ranging from cell phones to automotive braking systems. A world-wide community of ARM developers in semiconductor and product design companies includes software developers, system designers and hardware engineers. To date no book has directly addressed their need to develop the system and software for an ARM-based system. This text fills that gap. This book provides a comprehensive description of the operation of the ARM core from a developers perspective with a clear emphasis on software. It demonstrates not only how to write efficient ARM software in C and assembly but also how to optimize code. Example code throughout the book can be integrated into commercial products or used as templates to enable quick creation of productive software. The book covers both the ARM and Thumb instruction sets, covers Intel's XScale Processors, outlines distinctions among the versions of the ARM architecture, demonstrates how to implement DSP algorithms, explains exception and interrupt handling, describes the cache technologies that surround the ARM cores as well as the most efficient memory management techniques. A final chapter looks forward to the future of the ARM architecture considering ARMv6, the latest change to the instruction set, which has been designed to improve the DSP and media processing cap Read more...

TagsNetwork Security A Beginners Guide   [edit]

There is no sorcery to implementing proper information security, and the concepts that are included in this fully updated second edition are not rocket science. Build a concrete foundation in network security by using this hands-on guide. Examine the threats and vulnerabilities of your organization and manage them appropriately. Includes new chapters on firewalls, wireless security, and desktop protection. Plus, plenty of up-to-date information on biometrics, Windows.NET Server, state laws, the U.S. Patriot Act, and more. From Library Journal All companies rely on some security mechanisms to ensure their corporate privacy and information integrity. In many cases, the ability of the technician to explain a system's vulnerabilities to managers in order to acquire funding is as important as the technical skills to build the system. This book addresses a wide range of topics, from security basics to policies, practices, and practical solutions. Though intended for network administrators, this also acts as a good primer on security concepts for the lay computer user. A rock-solid resource for all libraries.

This well-written book Read more...

Sue Spielman, “JSTL: Practical Guide for JSP Programmers”
Morgan Kaufmann | 2003 | ISBN: 0126567557 | 229 pages | PDF | 6,9 MB
Web developers and page authors who use JavaServer Pages (JSP) know that it is much easier and efficient to implement web pages without reinventing the wheel each time. In order to shave valuable time from their development schedules, those who work with JSP have created, debugged, and used custom tagsa set of programmable actions that provide dynamic behavior to static pagespaving the way towards a more common, standard approach to using Java technology for web development.

The biggest boost to this effort however has only recently arrived in the form of a standard set of tag libraries, known as the JSTL, which now provides a wide range of functionality and gives web page authors a much more simplified approach to implementing dynamic, Java-based web sites.
JSTL: Practical Guide for JSP Programmers is a timely resource for anyone interested in doing large-scale J2EE application development. It sticks to the main features of the JSTL so that developers don’t have to sift through unnecessary details to begin using the tags and working with the expression language. Sue Spielman’s straight-forward, practical approach is enhanced with numerous code samples and insightful descriptions to make learning the JSTL a quickly and easily accomplished task.
* Written by a best-selling author with a wealth of development experience and recognition in the Java community.
* Covers the core elements of the JSTL including the four standard tag libraries (core, internationalization/format, XML, and SQL) and expression language.
* Includes a reference section for all of the tabs and attributes contained in the JSTL.
* Via a companion web site, provides downloadable code for the code samples in the book.
