Riemannian Geometry: A Modern Introduction
Posted: October 3rd, 2007, 11:37am CEST

TagsRiemannian Geometry A Modern Introduction   [edit]

Requiring only an understanding of differentiable manifolds, Isaac Chavel covers introductory ideas followed by a selection of more specialized topics in this second edition. He provides a clearer treatment of many topics, with new proofs of some theorems and a new chapter on the Riemannian geometry of surfaces. Among the classical topics shown in a new setting is isoperimetric inequalities in curved spaces. Completely new themes created by curvature include the classical Rauch comparison theorem and its consequences in geometry and topology, and the interaction of microscopic behavior of the geometry with the macroscopic structure of the space. Review "Each chapter concludes with an excellent section of notes and advanced exercises with further results, with hints and sketches of solutions at the end of the book...I think that it is the best reference on Riemannian geometry available, especially for someone interested in isoperimetric problems...Chavel is one of about a dozen mathematics books I keep at home for ready reference." Modern Astronomy: Expanding the Universe

TagsModern Astronomy Expanding The Universe   [edit]

Astronomy poses many of the same questions that religion does, the deepest questions a human being can ask: What is the universe? How big is it? How did it begin? How will it end? What part do we play in it? Are we alone? Through most of history, in fact, astronomy was part of religion. The astronomers of ancient times usually were priests. Astronomy in the 20th century changed humans' understanding as profoundly as Copernicus and Galileo did. At the start of the century, soon after George Ellery Hale, the first astronomer covered in this book, built his first large telescope, people thought the solar system was essentially at the center of the universe, much as people of Copernicus's time had believed the Earth was. By the end of the century, that picture had altered completely. Astronomers had shown that the Sun is a rather average star, located on one of the Milky Way's spiral arms rather than in the galaxy's center. The solar system is one of an untold number of planetary systems. Similarly, the Milky Way is just one among billions of galaxies. Those galaxies, in turn, are mere specks compared to vast masses of invisible, or "dark," matter surrounding them, whose nature is completely unknown. Read more...

Modern Antenna Design

TagsModern Antenna Design   [edit]

632 pages | 2005 | PDF | 5,34 Mb

The book contains a systematic approach to the subject. Every author would like to be read from front to back, but my own career assignments would have caused to me to jump around in this book. Nevertheless, Chapter 1 covers those topics that every user and designer should know. Because I deal with complete antenna design, which includes mounting the antenna, included are the effects of nearby structures and how they can be used to enhance the response. We all study ideal antennas floating in free space to help us understand the basics, but the real world is a little different.
