How often have you heard "anyone can design a game?" While it seems likean easy job, game ideas are cheap and plentiful. Advancing those ideasinto games that people want to play is one of the hardest, and mostunder-appreciated, tasks in the game development cycle. Andrew Rollingsand Ernest Adams on Game Design introduces both students and experienced developers to the craft of designing computer and video games for the retail market. The first half of the book is a detailed analysis of thekey game design elements: examining game concepts and worlds, storytelling, character and user interface design, core mechanics andbalance. The second half discusses each of the major game genres(action, adventure, role-playing, strategy, puzzle, and so on) andidentifies the design patterns and unique creative challenges thatcharacterize them. Filled with examples and worksheets, this book takesan accessible, practical approach to creating fun, innovative, andhighly playable games.

Vertex and pixel shader programming allows graphics and game developers to create photorealistic graphics on the personal computer for the first time. And with DirectX, programmers have access to an assembly language interface to the transformation and lighting hardware (vertex shaders) and the pixel pipeline (pixel shaders). Direct3D ShaderX begins with an introduction to vertex and pixel shader programming and moves on to a wide array of specialized shader tricks contributed by 27 experts in game and graphics programming. These range from character animation and lighting to photorealistic faces and non-photorealistic rendering. Special effects shaders are also presented, including those for such effects as bubbles, rippling water, animated grass, and particle flows.

This text presents a comprehensive treatment of signal processing and linear systems suitable for juniors and seniors in electrical engineering. Based on B. P. Lathi's widely used book, Linear Systems and Signals, it features additional applications to communications, controls, and filtering as well as new chapters on analog and digital filters and digital signal processing. Lathi emphasizes the physical appreciation of concepts rather than the mere mathematical manipulation of symbols. Avoiding the tendency to treat engineering as a branch of applied mathematics, he uses mathematics to enhance physical and intuitive understanding of concepts, instead of employing it only to prove axiomatic theory. Theoretical results are supported by carefully chosen examples and analogies, allowing students to intuitively discover meaning for themselves.
Reviews
Prof. J. K. Tugnait, Auburn University
This is a very well written book (as are all books by Lathi). Various concepts are carefully developed and explained. The author tries to be rigorous without being formal, yet maintains an easy intuitive style that is particularly useful for juniors. (There are) lots of intuitive explanations with physical insights.... a must for an average junior. Examples, exercises, problems, and illustrations are done very well and are quite useful for self-study. (Historical notes) are a nice touch. Makes the material interesting and human. (Background chapter) is a nice feature.

Eoin Colfer (pronounced "Owen")(born May 14, 1965) is an Irish author. He is most famous for having written the Artemis Fowl series.
Eoin Colfer followed his parents into teaching and soon began to invent stories for his pupils. His first novel, BENNY AND OMER, was a bestseller in Ireland - like ARTEMIS FOWL, it was written after a day's teaching and after his young son's bedtime. Eoin lives in Wexford, Ireland. ARTEMIS FOWL was shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and won the WHSmith Children's Book of the Year Award.
Artemis Fowl is a series of fantasy novels written by Irish author Eoin Colfer. They star child criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl. The series is written in a half-serious language alternating with dark moments, a style favoured by a number of popular children's authors, including J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter) and Roald Dahl (The Witches).
Artemis, the main character, is a rather ruthless but extremely intelligent young criminal whose main goal is the acquisition of money through various ingenious venture Read more...
This book's three parts take readers with no prior C++ knowledge all the way from basic concepts, through object-oriented programming and design techniques, to advanced C++ features and techniques. Coverage of object-oriented programming emphasizes various methods of expressing commonality and abstraction, and the advanced coverage illustrates coordination of advanced C++ by developing several interesting examples, including array classes, pointer classes, systems employing abstract algebra, FORTRAN-based matrices, function mapping, and data fitting.
From the Inside Flap
Like many scientists and engineers, much of our work involves writing computer programs. Recently we have been writing those programs in C++. We think that our programs are better and that we can do better science and engineering with these programs because they are written in C++. We think you should try C++, and we wrote this book to help you get started.
C++ is one of several new languages that use a programming style called object-oriented programming. To write large programs that are correct, readable, modifiable, affordable, and efficient requires the same creative effort and persistence characteristic of other endeavors in science and engineering. Traditional programming languages, including FORTRAN and C, force us to communicate with the computer in a demeaningly simplistic manner. C++ and an object-oriented programming style elevate the communication to a more abstract level: They provide me Read more...

Choice : Henry Ford claimed to have invented nothing new but simply to have combined the discoveries of others. Similarly, modern designers of complex devices, even those as innovative as the Segway, rely on earlier designers for many of the basic elements in the new device. The trick is to be aware of these earlier designs. Sourcebooks such as Parmley's are a primary source of such information. It is the latest in a line extending at least from Ramelli in the 16th century through Henry T. Brown's 1868 Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements...

This text is designed for the sophomore/junior level introduction to discrete mathematics taken by students preparing for future coursework in areas such as math, computer science and engineering. Rosen has become a bestseller largely due to how effectively it addresses the main portion of the discrete market, which is typically characterized as the mid to upper level in rigor. The strength of Rosen's approach has been the effective balance of theory with relevant applications, as well as the overall comprehensive nature of the topic coverage.

Also, you can find not only simple and middle-level problems but also high-level problems to provide a good source for active students. Unfortunately, the author uses the letters "F" and "T" in the truth tables instead of much easier and perspective "0" and "1", which correspond to the real needs, e.g., in computer science. Cleary studied non-sex offenders, in-treatment sex offenders, and never-treated sex offenders to determine whether their behavior reflected the General Theory of Crime. She explored the link between abusive parenting and criminal history and analogous behaviors and opportunity and routine activities in victim selection. Data showed moderate support for the self-control assertion that offenders do not specialize and high support for the generality of deviance. Although in-treatment sex offenders differed in self-control, mixed results were found for the relationship between low self-control and analogous and criminal behaviors among all three groups. Interviews supported the role of opportunity in victim selection; respondents used victims' physical proximity and/or emotional availability to gain access to them.

This book provides the reader with an understanding of the hazards involved in using electrical equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres. It is based on the newly adopted international IEC79 Series of Standards that are now harmonizing and replacing older national Standards. Explosion-proof installations can be expensive to design, install and operate. The strategies and techniques described in this book can significantly reduce costs whilst maintaining plant safety. The book explains the associated terminology and its correct use - from Area Classification through to the selection of explosion-protected electrical apparatus, describing how protection is achieved and maintained in line with these international requirements. The IEC standards require that engineering staff and their management are trained effectively and safely in Hazardous Areas, and this book is designed to help fulfill that need. A basic understanding of instrumentation and electrical theory would be of benefit to the reader, but no previous knowledge of hazardous area installation is required.

Isn't it time you learned the latest (J2EE 1.4) versions of Servlets and JSPs? This book will get you way up to speed on the technology you'll know it so well, in fact, that you can pass the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) 1.4 exam. Because probability and statistics are as much about intuition and problem solving, as they are about theorem proving, students can find it very difficult to make a successful transition from lectures to examinations and practice. Since the subject is critical in many modern applications, Yuri Suhov and Michael Kelbert have rectified deficiencies in traditional lecture-based methods, by combining a wealth of exercises for which they have supplied complete solutions. These solutions are adapted to needs and skills of students and include basic mathematical facts as needed.

Presents the definitive insider's guide to the design and development of the C++ programming language. Provides insights into the aims, principles, and real-world constraints which shaped C++. Paper. DLC: C++ (Computer program language)
From the Inside Flap
"He who does not plow, must write."
--Martin A. Hansen
The ACM HOPL-2 conference on the History of Programming Languages asked me to write a paper on the history of C++. This seemed a reasonable idea and a bit of an honor, so I started writing. To get a more comprehensive and balanced view of C++'s growth, I asked a few friends from the early days of C++ for their recollections. That caused news of this project to travel through the grapevine. There, the story mutated, and one day I received a message from a friend asking where he could buy my new book on the design of C++. That email message is the real origin of this book.
Traditional books about programming and programming languages explain what a language is and how to use it. However, many people are also curious about why a language is the way it is and how it came to be that way. This book answers these last two questions for C++. It explains how C++ evolved from its first design to the language in use today. It describes the key problems, design aims, language ideas, and constraints that shaped C++, and how they changed over time.
Naturally, C++ and the ideas about design and programming that shaped it didn't just mutate by themselves. What rea Read more...

Design patterns have been used with great success in software programming. They improve productivity, creativity, and efficiency in web design and development, and they reduce code bloat and complexity. In the context of CSS and HTML, design patterns are sets of common functionality that work across various browsers and screen readers, without sacrificing design values or accessibility or relying on hacks and filters. But until now they have not been applied systematically to HTML and CSS web design and development.
With the help of Pro CSS and HTML Design Patterns, you can reap the benefits of using design patterns in your HTML and CSS code. The book provides you with all the CSS and HTML design patterns you need. Web development expert and author Michael Bowers then takes you through multiple design patterns for text, backgrounds, borders, images, forms, layouts, and much more. From the Back Cover
Appropriate for both scientists and engineers. A comprehensive introduction to calculus-based physics which presents balance between theory and applications, between concepts and problem-solving, between mathematics and physics, and finally, between technology and traditional pedagogical methods. Maintains theoretical coverage, but supplements it with applications boxes, on topics such as: timed traffic lights, jet engines, simple machines, drag racing, flight navigator, cranes, quartz watches, smoke detectors, capacitors as power sources for laptop computers, television antennas, and fiber optics. Places emphasis on concepts, showing the motivation for the physics. This conceptual emphasis has been maintained, but supporting problem-solving apparatus has been dramatically revised. All mathematics in the book is self-contained, and major mathematical tools are introduced as needed. Vectors, a topic that requires a lot of practice, are covered in depth.

A handbook filling in a gap in the literature on the study of directed graphs. Presents a unified and comprehensive survey of the subject, covering theoretical and practical aspects, with algorithms, proofs, and applications of digraphs. Includes more than 700 exercises and 180 figures which further clarify topics. DLC: Directed graphs.
The study of directed graphs has developed enormously over recent decades, yet no book covers more than a tiny fraction of the results from more than 3000 research articles on the topic. Digraphs is the first book to present a unified and comprehensive survey of the subject. In addition to covering the theoretical aspects, including detailed proofs of many important results, the authors present a number of algorithms and applications. The applications of digraphs and their generalizations include among other things recent developments in the Travelling Salesman Problem, genetics and network connectivity. More than 700 exercises and 180 figures will help readers to study the topic while open problems and conjectures will inspire further research.
This book will be essential reading and reference for all graduate students, researchers and professionals in mathematics, operational research, computer science and other areas who are interested in graph theory and its applications. Read more...
Review
"All the ingredients that contribute to making a good lecture are in the book: well-explained theory, interesting examples, and funny jokes and amusing stories about famous probabilists and statisticians. The authors also give rhythm to the flow of the subjects, making the volume a very pleasant book to read."

He shows you exactly how each one works, and how to use them most effectively in your own projects. After you learn about these design patterns, you'll wonder how you ever developed web sites without them!
About the Author
Michael Bowers is a software developer who has been cranking out all kinds of code for 17 years professionally and 25 years personally. He taught himself to program when he was 14 and hasn't stopped since.
He has been the chief software developer and architect for many projects ranging from web sites to application frameworks to compilers. He has built intranet applications Read more... Three major software verification techniques are discussed: Semantic program synthesis and analysis, static program analysis and dynamic program analysis. The correctness by construction paradigm is illustrated using the VDM-SL and the corresponding CSK Toolbox. The discussion involves the synthesis of direct and/or indirect specification, interpreting the latter and carrying out high-level testing of the specification.
Problems are included in the text and one or more difficult exercises appear at the end of each chapter. Also, where appropriate, STAD’s handling of the concepts is illustrated.
Written for advanced students and professionals wishing to explore more than one technique, this comprehensive text will be invaluable with its unique integrated approach.

Moreover, this handy reference shows you how to design a small instrumentation radar system and an airborne telemetry system. Other key discussions include circuits and components for system evaluations and design, RF measurement instrumentation, antennas and associated hardware, and guidelines for purchasing test equipment. The book also serves as a valuable on-the-job training resource for sales engineers and a graduate-level text for courses in this area.

After lying buried for almost three quarters of a century in the columns of a single newspaper, unknown even to Lincoln specialists, this eulogy on President Zachary Taylor was discovered by sheer accident. It was then brought to the attention of Rev. William E. Barton, D.D., of Chicago, who has long been an ardent student of Abraham Lincoln and has published several books about him. By diligent searching he was able to gather the many details which he has embodied in his Introduction to the eulogy, and the publishers have gladly coöperated with him for the preservation of all the material in a worthy and attractive form.

This is the first Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET) book to provide a comprehensive discussion of the major data structures and algorithms. Here, instead of having to translate material on C++ or Java, the professional or student VB.NET programmer will and a tutorial on how to use data structures and algorithms and a reference for implementation using VB.NET for data structures and algorithms from the .NET Framework Class Library as well as those that must be developed by the programmer.
This book is written primarily as a practical overview of the data structures and algorithms all serious computer programmers need to know and understand. Given this, there is no formal analysis of the data structures and algorithms covered in the book. Hence, there is not a single mathematical formula and not one mention of Big O analysis (for the latter the reader is referred to any of the books listed in the bibliography). Instead, the various data structures and algorithms are presented as problem-solving tools. We use simple timing tests to compare the performance of the data structures and algorithms discussed in the book.
This book can be used in both beginning and advanced computer programming courses that use the VB.NET language and, most importantly, by the professional Visual Basic programmer.

The field of nonlinear dynamics and low-dimensional chaos has developed rapidly over the past twenty years. The principal advances have been in theoretical aspects but more recent applications in a wide variety of the sciences have been made. Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos in Semiconductors is the first book to concentrate on specific physical and experimental situations in semiconductors as well as examine how to use chaos theory to explain semiconductor phenomena. Written by a well-respected researcher of chaos in semiconductors, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos in Semiconductors provides a rich and detailed account of progress in research on nonlinear effects in semiconductor physics. Discussing both theory and experiment, the author shows how this powerful combination has lead to real progress with difficult nonlinear problems in this technologically important field. Nonlinear carrier dynamics, caused by low-temperature impact ionization avalanche of impurities in extrinsic semiconductors, and the emergence of intractable chaos are treated in detail. The book explores impact ionization models, linear stability analysis, bifurcation theory, fractal dimensions, and various analytical methods in chaos theory. It also describes spatial and spatiotemporal evolution of the current density filament formed by the impact ionization avalanche.

Herbert Ellern wrote this classic work in pyrotechnics for an academic audience. The coverage of fireworks per se is scanty. However, for those who want an introduction to the basic science behind a wide range of pyrotechnic processes, this book is so far without equal. Dr. Ellern provides many formulations used in commercial and military pyrotechnics at the time of writing the book. This work is a must have for any serious collection in pyrotechnics, but its focus does lie outside of the subject area of fireworks as most people understand fireworks

Dov M. Gabbay, John Woods “The Many Valued and Nonmonotonic Turn in Logic, Volume 8″
North Holland | 2007-08-13 | ISBN:0444516239 | 690 pages | PDF | 4,4 Mb
The present volume of the Handbook of the History of Logic brings together two of the most important developments in 20th century non-classical logic. These are many-valuedness and non-monotonicity. On the one approach, in deference to vagueness, temporal or quantum indeterminacy or reference-failure, sentences that are classically non-bivalent are allowed as inputs and outputs to consequence relations. Many-valued, dialetheic, fuzzy and quantum logics are, among other things, principled attempts to regulate the flow-through of sentences that are neither true nor false. On the second, or non-monotonic, approach, constraints are placed on inputs (and sometimes on outputs) of a classical consequence relation, with a view to producing a notion of consequence that serves in a more realistic way the requirements of real-life inference.

Elsevier Science | 2006-09-13 | ISBN:0444527664 | 310 pages | PDF | 5,4 Mb
This book discussed fundamental problems in dynamics, which extensively exist in engineering, natural and social sciences. The book presented a basic theory for the interactions among many dynamical systems and for a system whose motions are constrained naturally or artificially. The methodology and techniques presented in this book are applicable to discontinuous dynamical systems in physics, engineering and control. In addition, they may provide useful tools to solve non-traditional dynamics in biology, stock market and internet network et al, which cannot be easily solved by the traditional Newton mechanics. The new ideas and concepts will stimulate ones thought and creativities in corresponding subjects. The author also used the simple, mathematical language to write this book. Therefore, this book is very readable, which can be either a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students or a reference book for researches in dynamics.

The Handbook of Modal Logic contains 20 articles, which collectively introduce contemporary modal logic, survey current research, and indicate the way in which the field is developing. The articles survey the field from a wide variety of perspectives: the underling theory is explored in depth, modern computational approaches are treated, and six major applications areas of modal logic (in Mathematics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Game Theory, and Philosophy) are surveyed. The book contains both well-written expository articles, suitable for beginners approaching the subject for the first time, and advanced articles, which will help those already familiar with the field to deepen their expertise.

“Information Assurance: Dependability and Security in Networked Systems”
Morgan Kaufmann | 2007-11-16 | ISBN:0123735661 | 576 pages | PDF | 3,5 Mb
In todays fast paced, infocentric environment, professionals increasingly rely on networked information technology to do business. Unfortunately, with the advent of such technology came new and complex problems that continue to threaten the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of our electronic information. It is therefore absolutely imperative to take measures to protect and defend information systems by ensuring their security and non-repudiation. Information Assurance skillfully addresses this issue by detailing the sufficient capacity networked systems need to operate while under attack, and itemizing failsafe design features such as alarms, restoration protocols, and management configurations to detect problems and automatically diagnose and respond. Moreover, this volume is unique in providing comprehensive coverage of both state-of-the-art survivability and security techniques, and the manner in which these two components interact to build robust Information Assurance (IA).

Douglas Hofstadter , “Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies”
Basic Books (March 1, 1996) | ISBN:0465024750 | 532 pages | Djvu | 5,2 Mb
Douglas Hofstadter, best known for his masterpiece Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, tackles the subject of artificial intelligence and machine learning in his thought-provoking work Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies, written in conjunction with the Fluid Analogies Research Group at the University of Michigan. Driven to discover whether computers can be made to “think” like humans, Hofstadter and his colleagues created a variety of computer programs that extrapolate sequences, apply pattern-matching strategies, make analogies, and even act “creative.” As always, Hofstadter’s work requires devotion on the part of the reader, but rewards him with fascinating insights into the nature of both human and machine intelligence.

Wynn C. Stirling, “Satisficing Games and Decision Making: With Applications to Engineering and Computer Science”
Cambridge University Press | ISBN 052103891X | 2007 | PDF | 267 Pages | 1.4 Mb
We constantly make decisions which are simply “good enough” rather than optimal–a type of decision for which Wynn Stirling has adopted the word “satisficing”. Most computer decision making algorithms, however, seek only the optimal solution based on rigid criteria and reject others. Outlining an alternative approach, this book uses novel algorithms and techniques to more closely model the way humans make decisions. It is, therefore, of interest to engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians working on artificial intelligence and expert systems.

Spread spectrum and CDMA are cutting-edge technologies widely used in operational radar, navigation and telecommunication systems and play a pivotal role in the development of the forthcoming generations of systems and networks. This comprehensive resource presents the spread spectrum concept as a product of the advancements in wireless IT, shows how and when the classical problems of signal transmission/processing stimulate the application of spread spectrum, and clarifies the advantages of spread spectrum philosophy. Detailed coverage is provided of the tools and instruments for designing spread spectrum and CDMA signals answering why a designer will prefer one solution over another. The approach adopted is wide-ranging, covering issues that apply to both data transmission and data collection systems such as telecommunications, radar, and navigation li>Presents a theory-based analysis complemented by practical examples and real world case studies resulting in a self-sufficient treatment of the subjec Contains detailed discussions of new trends in spread spectrum technology such as multi-user reception, multicarrier modulation, OFDM, MIMO and space-time codin Provides advice on designing discrete spread spectrum signals and signal sets for time-frequency measuring, synchronization and multi-user communication Features numerous Matlab-based problems and other exercises to encourage the reader to initiate independent investigations and simulation This valuable text provides timely guidance on the current status and future potential of spread spectrum and CDMA and is an invaluable resource for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students, lecturers and practising engineers and researchers involved in the deployment and development of spread spectrum and CDMA technology. Supported by a Companion website on which instructors and lecturers can find a solutions manual for the problems and Matlab programming, electronic versions of some of the figures and other useful resources such as a list of abbreviations.

Data Networking is a capability that allows users to combine separate data bases, telecommunication systems, and specialised computer operations into a single integrated system, so that data communication can be handled as easily as voice messages. Data communications is the problem of getting information from one place to another reliably (secure both from channel disruptions and deliberate interference) while conforming to user requirements. IP (Internet protocol) is the central pillar of the Internet and was designed primarily for internetworking as being a simple protocol almost any network could carry.
