The Economics of Input - Output Analysis:
This textbook provides a systematic survey of the most recent developments in input-output analysis and their applications, helping us to examine questions such as: Which industries are competitive? What are the multiplier effects of an investment program? How do environmental restrictions impact on prices? Linear programming and national accounting are introduced and used to resolve issues such as the choice of technique, the comparative advantage of a national economy, its efficiency and dynamic performance. Technological and environmental spillovers are analyzed, both at the national level (between industries) and the international level (the measurement of globalization effects).

Symantec's chief antivirus researcher has written the definitive guide to contemporary virus threats, defense techniques, and analysis tools. Unlike most books on computer viruses, The Art of Computer Virus Research and Defense is a reference written strictly for white hats: IT and security professionals responsible for protecting their organizations against malware. Peter Szor systematically covers everything you need to know, including virus behavior and classification, protection strategies, antivirus and worm-blocking techniques, and much more.
Szor presents the state-of-the-art in both malware and protection, providing the full technical detail that professionals need to handle increasingly complex attacks. Along the way, he provides extensive information on code metamorphism and other emerging techniques, so you can anticipate and prepare for future threats.
Szor also offers the most thorough and practical primer on virus analysis ever published—addressing everything from creating your own personal laboratory to automating the analysis process.

As pop culture, games are as important as film or television–but game design has yet to develop a theoretical framework or critical vocabulary. In Rules of Play Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman present a much-needed primer for this emerging field. They offer a unified model for looking at all kinds of games, from board games and sports to computer and video games. As active participants in game culture, the authors have written Rules of Play as a catalyst for innovation, filled with new concepts, strategies, and methodologies for creating and understanding games..
Building an aesthetics of interactive systems, Salen and Zimmerman define core concepts like "play," "design," and "interactivity." They look at games through a series of eighteen "game design schemas," or conceptual frameworks, including games as systems of emergence and information, as contexts for social play, as a storytelling medium, and as sites of cultural resistance.
Written for game scholars, game developers, and interactive designers, Rules of Play is a textbook, reference book, and theoretical guide. It is the first comprehensive attempt to establish a solid theoretical framework for the emerging discipline of game design.

This first edition text is for use in the introductory circuit analysis or circuit theory course taught in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology departments. The main objective of this book is to present circuit analysis in a clear, easy-to-understand manner, with many practical applications to interest the student.
The authors present principles in an appealing and lucid step-by-step manner, carefully explaining each step. Important formulas are highlighted to help students sort out what is essential and what is not. Many pedagogical aids reinforce the concepts learned in the text so that students get comfortable with the various methods of analysis presented in the text.
Review
Summary: good general intro to circuits
Rating: 4
This is as good a circuit theory book as you will find at the moment and covers the subject up to fourier/laplace transforms, 3phase circuits, and 2-ports. Unfortunately all the books in this field are turning into 1000page full-colour monsters. I can't help feeling that if you want a nice cheap, concise intro to circuits, then go for Schaum's Basic Circuit Analysis by O'Malley. You get all the same material and save yourself 15quid!

No slang-worthy subject is too taboo for this collection of more than 15,000 definitions of words that allude to drugs, sports, contemporary society, and a seemingly unending supply of slang terms for sex and bodily functions. Fully revised and expanded, and with lively examples of usage throughout, this up-to-the-minute reference paints a vivid picture of our cultural and social preoccupations while bringing intriguing examples of eccentricity and irreverence back to the linguistic frontline.
From Library Journal
Rife with ribaldry, with an amusing contrast between tart words and cool, analytical definitions, this book may mobilize the censors. A typical entry has variant spelling or wording, geographical range, meanings, and comments--often guesswork--on tone, nuance, associations, social context, history, derivation, and related words. Pronunciation is sometimes left unclear. A few slang styles, such as backslang and pig Latin, are noted. Published as the Bloomsbury Dictionary of Contemporary Slang in Britain , this work covers Britain, the United States, and Australia well, other English-speaking areas lightly. The author, a lexicographer, draws from the media and personal observation of such users of slang as hippies and Valley Girls. Recommended more as a fun reflection of speech in recent decades than as definitive scholarship.

The essays in this book are based on researches the author has undertaken on a wide range of topics, some using equipment no more elaborate than what one can find in an ordinary kitchen, others making elegant use of sophisticated experimental apparatus. Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not), or that appear to be well understood but turn out to be subtly devious. Written in an engagingly personal style, the essays will be of interest to students of physics and related disciplines as well as professional physicists. Though they deal with subtle concepts, the discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure. Silverman's researches deal with in quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, electromagnetism and optics, gravity, thermodynamics, and the physics of fluids, and these essays address .such questions as: How does one know that atomic electrons move? Would an "anti-atom" fall upward? How is it possible for randomly emitted particles to arrive at a detector preferentially in pairs? Can one influence electrons in London by not watching them in New York? Can a particle be influenced by a magnetic field through which it does not pass? Data Mining, the automatic extraction of implicit and potentially useful information from data, is increasingly used in commercial, scientific and other application areas.
This book explains and explores the principal techniques of Data Mining: for classification, generation of association rules and clustering. It is written for readers without a strong background in mathematics or statistics and focuses on detailed examples and explanations of the algorithms given. This should prove of value to readers of all kinds, from those whose only use of data mining techniques will be via commercial packages right through to academic researchers.
This book aims to help the general reader develop the necessary understanding to use commercial data mining packages discriminatingly, as well as enabling the advanced reader to understand or contribute to future technical advances in the field. Each chapter has practical exercises to enable readers to check their progress. A full glossary of technical terms used is included.

A practical new approach that brings together circuit theory and field theory for the practicing engineer
To put it frankly, the traditional education of most engineers and scientists leaves them often unprepared to handle many of the practical problems they encounter. The Fields of Electronics: Understanding Electronics Using Basic Physics offers a highly original correction to this state of affairs.
Most engineers learn circuit theory and field theory separately. Electromagnetic field theory is an important part of basic physics, but because it is a very mathematical subject, the connection to everyday problems is not emphasized. Circuit theory, on the other hand, is by its nature very practical. However, circuit theory cannot describe the nature of a facility, the interconnection of many pieces of hardware, or the power grid that interfaces each piece of hardware.
The Fields of Electronics offers a unique approach that brings the physics and the circuit theory together into a seamless whole for today's practicing engineers. With a clear focus on the real-world problems confronting the practitioner in the field, the book thoroughly details the principles that apply to:
* Capacitors, inductors, resistors, and transformers
* Utility power and circuit concepts
* Grounding and shielding
* Radiation
* Analog and digital signals
* Facilities and sites
Written with very little mathematics, and requiring only some background in electronics, this book provides an emine

Draft of "Mathematics of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)," by J.O. Smith, CCRMA, Stanford, Winter 2002. The latest draft as linked HTML version are available on-line at http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/~jos/mdft/.
Book Excerpts:
The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) can be understood as a numerical approximation to the Fourier Transform. However, the DFT has its own exact Fourier theory, which is the main focus of this book. The DFT is normally encountered in practice as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) -- a high-speed algorithm for computing the DFT. The FFT is used extensively in a wide range of digital signal processing applications, including spectrum analysis, high-speed convolution (linear filtering), filter banks, signal detection and estimation, system identification, audio compression (e.g., MPEG-II AAC), spectral modeling sound synthesis, and many other applications; some of these will be discussed in Chapter 8.
This book chooses to discuss DFT over the FT since the FT demands readers to use calculus right off the bat, while the DFT, on the other hand, replaces the infinite integral with a finite sum of various quantities. Calculus is not needed to define the DFT (or its inverse, as this book will show), and with finite summation limits, readers cannot encounter difficulties with infinities. Moreover, in the field of digital signal processing, signals and spectra are processed only in sampled form, so that the DFT is what readers really need anyway. In s

Fourier analysis is one of the most useful and widely employed sets of tools for the engineer, the scientist, and the applied mathematician. As such, students and practitioners in these disciplines need a practical and mathematically solid introduction to its principles. They need straightforward verifications of its results and formulas, and they need clear indications of the limitations of those results and formulas. It provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical theory of Fourier analysis, including the development of Fourier series, "classical" Fourier transforms, generalized Fourier transforms and analysis, and the discrete theory. Much of the author's development is strikingly different from typical presentations. His approach to defining the classical Fourier transform results in a much cleaner, more coherent theory that leads naturally to a starting point for the generalized theory. Fundamentals of Embedded Software: Where C and Assembly Meet is a refreshing alternative to the traditional sophomore text on computer organization and assembly language programming. The text approaches assembly the way it is commonly used in practice>to implement small, fast, or special-purpose routines called from a main program written in a high-level language such as C. By using an embedded software context, the text introduces multi-threaded programming, preemptive and non-preemptive systems, shared resources, and scheduling, thus providing a solid foundation for subsequent courses on operating systems, real-time systems, networking, and microprocessor-based design.
The text will help you:
* appreciate the often overlooked consequences and limitations of binary representation.
* implement fast real-number arithmetic using fixed-point reals instead of floating-point.
* reinforce your comprehension of scope, parameter passing, recursion, and memory allocation.
* employ features of C (such as bit-manipulation and variant access) commonly used in embedded software.
* write functions in Intel x86 protected mode assembly to be called from C.
* estimate maximum data rate and latency for various styles of I/O programming.
* manage multiple threads, shared resources, and critical sections.
* develop programming practices that avoid priority inversions, deadlocks, and shared memory problems.

Sure, we all know Star Trek is fiction, but warp drives and transporters and holodecks don't seem altogether implausible. Are any of these futuristic inventions fundamentally outlawed by physics as we understand it today? The Physics of Star Trek takes a lighthearted look at this subject, speculating on how the wonders of Star Trek technology might actually work--and, in some cases, revealing why the inventions are impossible or impractical even for an advanced civilization. (Example: "dematerializing" a person for transport would require about as much energy as is released by a 100-megaton hydrogen bomb). The Physics of Star Trek deserves merit for providing a refresher course on topics such as relativity and antimatter, but let's face it: the reason most people will want to read this book is simply that it's fun to poke holes in the premises of their favorite science fiction shows!
From Publishers Weekly
Even those who have never watched an episode of Star Trek will be entertained and enlightened by theoretical physicist Krauss's adventurous investigation of interstellar flight, time travel, teleportation of objects and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Case Western Reserve professor Krauss maintains that Star Trek's writers were sometimes far ahead of scientists?and famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking's foreword, endorsing the possibilities of faster-than-light travel and journeying back in time, supports that notion. On the other hand, Krauss also argues tha

In Search of Lost Time" details mankind's quest, throughout the ages, to measure and understand time itself. The book is a reflection of Derek York's obsession with time and its measurement. It takes the reader from the pyramids of Egypt, through Stonehenge and the South China Plain, to the universities of Cambridge, McGill and Chicago, to the Patent Office in Berne, and back to the Ethiopian desert on the banks of the Awash River. On this time-odyssey the reader enters the mind-bending universe of the Special and General Theories of Relativity, the ghostly world of Quantum Mechanics and the unpredictable haunts of Chaos. Companions to share and illuminate the path range from Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" and Lewis Carroll's "Alice" to J.B. Priestley's "Dangerous Corner". The reader will meet the father of master-spy Kim Philby in the Empty Quarter of Arabia, the fantasist Velikovsky in the clouds, and Newton, Darwin, Rutherford, Einstein and the great earth scientists of this century who fathomed the depths of lost time and discovered the age of the earth. Written in an engaging, non-technical style for the lay-reader this book should delight and amaze all who encounter it.

Presents the definitive insider's guide to the design and development of the C++ programming language. Provides insights into the aims, principles, and real-world constraints which shaped C++. Paper. DLC: C++ (Computer program language)
From the Inside Flap
"He who does not plow, must write."
--Martin A. Hansen
The ACM HOPL-2 conference on the History of Programming Languages asked me to write a paper on the history of C++. This seemed a reasonable idea and a bit of an honor, so I started writing. To get a more comprehensive and balanced view of C++'s growth, I asked a few friends from the early days of C++ for their recollections. That caused news of this project to travel through the grapevine. There, the story mutated, and one day I received a message from a friend asking where he could buy my new book on the design of C++. That email message is the real origin of this book.
Traditional books about programming and programming languages explain what a language is and how to use it. However, many people are also curious about why a language is the way it is and how it came to be that way. This book answers these last two questions for C++. It explains how C++ evolved from its first design to the language in use today. It describes the key problems, design aims, language ideas, and constraints that shaped C++, and how they changed over time.
Naturally, C++ and the ideas about design and programming that shaped it didn't just mutate by themselves. What rea

What do topics ranging from organic chemistry to Napoleon's campaigns have to do with computer programming? This collection of essays demonstrates the many varied aspects of programming, showing how programming can be both a fun and elegant science.
Some of the essays cover programming techniques, like how profilers can provide insight into the dynamic behavior of programs, and methods for making data files self-describing. These techniques deal with real programs and they are realistically illustrated, using the C and Awk languages. Bentley also provides the reader with some tricks of the programmer's trade, like a collection of rules of thumb and hints for finding simple solutions to hard problems.
These essays also originally appeared in the author's column in Communication of the ACM, and have been substantially revised, incorporating new sections, problems, and reader comments.

* Grounding and shielding
* Radiation
* Analog and digital signals
* Facilities and sites
Written with very little mathematics, and requiring only some background in electronics, this book provides an emine

Volume 2 of Donald Knuth's classic series The Art of Computer Programming covers seminumerical algorithms, with topics ranging from random number generators to floating point operations and other optimized arithmetic algorithms. Truly comprehensive and meticulously written, this book (and series) is that rarest of all creatures--a work of authoritative scholarship in classical computer science, but one that can be read and used profitably by virtually all working programmers.
The book begins with fundamental questions regarding random numbers and how to use algorithms to generate them. Subsequent chapters demonstrate efficient computation of single-precision and double-precision arithmetic calculations and modular arithmetic. The text then presents prime factorization (which can be used in cryptography, for instance) and algorithms for calculating fractions. This volume ends with algorithms for polynomial arithmetic and manipulation of power-series topics, which will benefit those with some knowledge of calculus.
Throughout this beautifully presented edition, Knuth incorporates hundreds of useful exercises for trying out the algorithms. These range from simple problems to larger research project topics. (The book provides answers, where appropriate, at the end of the book.) The result is a text that's suitable for college or graduate-level computer science courses or individual study by programmers. Volume 2 is an indispensable part of any working programmer's

The Veil Lifted, and Light Thrown on Crime and its Causes, and Criminals and their Haunts. Facts and Disclosures.
Author: William Howe
Language: English
Published: 1886
It may not be amiss to remark, in explanation of the startling and sensational title chosen for this production, that logic has not yet succeeded in framing a title-page which shall clearly indicate the nature of a book. The greatest adepts have frequently taken refuge in some fortuitous word, which has served their purpose better than the best results of their analysis. So it was in the present case. "Danger!" is a thrilling and warning word, suggestive of the locomotive headlight, and especially applicable to the subject matter of the following pages, in which the crimes of a great city are dissected and exposed from the arcanum or confessional of what we may be pardoned for designating the best-known criminal law offices in America.

Firstly I am no great critic or anyone but I am a huge fan of "CHETAN BHAGAT" and I am highly disappointed by his work this time as he considers himself an youth writer than I guess the judging part should also be left to us. This is what I think of this book:
So this book released with much anticipation and finally I got a copy of it I grabbed it from the stores shelf to ensure I get a copy of it. Little did I know they were going to stay there for long.
So is it that bad? Yes to some extent. I know it is disappointing but its the fact. There is nothing cool about this one. The characters are inspired from his earlier books "Five point someone" and "One night" Same ol' ordinary guy(in this one it's Govind patel) his cool Friend Ishaan(ryan in five point) and a dumb guy "omi" a character which is very much similar to 'Alok" from his first book. The first phase of the book is simply boring and will take you back to the memories of his first two books on how the three guys have fun and the times they met and so on, and also the introduction of the city(Ahmadabad) is very short and non-descriptive, surely the author does not pick up the nerves of the spirit of small towns as he had captured the magic of the "II T's" and the "call centre's" this is where the main drawback of this book is there is nothing of small town in this small town story, India is off course changing but the small town mentality is surely not covered in this one and there is too much of pointless cricket in it(may be it seems too much because of the ongoing IPL series)tough the book have been better without it,as cricket has no important role to play in this small town story I guess it's just introduced hoping to cash on the cricket love of Indian people but it goes in vain.. After our protagonist makes his first mistake(the earthquake part)it lacks emotions, but from that point the plot moves on then reading is made fun as MR.Bhagat again enters his favourite "love angle" and the way he handles such issues have always being a favourite with us all. But this fun does not stay long as the author again goes into the dark phase of politics and religion and that is told in an uninteresting way.Then the trip to Australia is like a yash raj movie where the screen couple just escape to any foreign locations for their dance sequences surely there is no dance in here, and the reason for the kid declining the Australian citizenship is not understood if he declined it out of patriotism or any other one? Till the time the second mistake happens, you already pray for the book to end soon. And then again the "Five point phase" romantic moments between the protagonist and his best Friends sister, and then it's the final take(thank god!) Yes the riots and then there happens the third mistakes. The story is nothing you have never heard of it's the same one with all the masala of the Hindi movie and the way the sensitive issue of religion and riots is handled in the book is far from real and the para' in which the author describes the riots from the bank's roof is straight away a seen from Deepa Mehta's "1947-Earth". I surely see why MR.Bhagat is moving to bollywood because inspiration is the base of this Indian film industry. I can say that if the protagonist made three mistakes in the book I made a fourth mistake by reading it! So if you are a die hard "CHETAN BHAGAT" fan you'll surely be disappointed by this one, but I know he'll come up with something interesting the next time.
This is an average book and it'll be getting not more than "two and a half" star out of five.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
New World Library | ISBN 1577311523 | 1999-09-27 | PDF | 208 pages | 0.55 Mb
Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers. In The Power of Now, already a word-of-mouth bestseller in Canada, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical. In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present. Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living present, fully, and intensely, in the Now.

A landmark comparative study, this volume analyzes the characteristic thought patterns of four Asian peoples--the Indians, the Chinese, the Japanese, and the Tibetans--as these are revealed in their language, their logic, and their cultural products. Hajime Nakamura focuses particularly on the impact of Buddhism, seeking to clarify the ways in which Buddhism and Indian logic were introduced from India into China, Japan, and Tibet, and how this universal religion and logic has become modifed according to the native characteristics of each people.

Robert Dallek's brilliant two-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson has received an avalanche of praise. Michael Beschloss, in The Los Angeles Times, said that it "succeeds brilliantly." The New York Times called it "rock solid" and The Washington Post hailed it as "invaluable." And Sidney Blumenthal in The Boston Globe wrote that it was "dense with astonishing incidents." Now Dallek has condensed his two-volume masterpiece into what is surely the finest one-volume biography of Johnson available. Based on years of research in over 450 manuscript collections and oral histories, as well as numerous personal interviews, this biography follows Johnson, the "human dynamo," from the Texas hill country to the White House. We see LBJ, in the House and the Senate, whirl his way through sixteen- and eighteen-hour days, talking, urging, demanding, reaching for influence and power, in an uncommonly successful congressional career. Then, in the White House, we see Johnson as the visionary leader who worked his will on Congress like no president before or since, enacting a range of crucial legislation, from Medicare and environmental protection to the most significant advances in civil rights for black Americans ever achieved. And we see the depth of Johnson's private anguish as he became increasingly ensnared in Vietnam. In these pages Johnson emerges as a man of towering intensity and anguished insecurity, of grandiose ambition and grave self-doubt, a man who was brilliant, crude, intimidating, compassionate, overbearing, driven: "A tornado in pants." Gracefully written and delicately balanced, this singular biography reveals both the greatness and the tangled complexities of one of the most extravagant characters ever to step onto the presidential stage.

Fundamentals of Photonics
992 pages | Wiley-Interscience; 1 edition (August 15, 1991) | English | ISBN-10: 0471839655 | ISBN-13:9780471839651 | PDF | 11.5 MB
In recent years, photonics has found increasing applications in such areas as communications, signal processing, computing, sensing, display, printing, and energy transport. Now, Fundamentals of Photonics is the first self-contained introductory-level textbook to offer a thorough survey of this rapidly expanding area of engineering and applied physics. Featuring a logical blend of theory and applications, coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of light with matter, and the theory of semiconductor materials and their optical properties.
Presented at increasing levels of complexity, these sections serve as building blocks for the treatment of more advanced topics, such as Fourier optics and holography, guidedwave and fiber optics, photon sources and detectors, electro-optic and acousto-optic devices, nonlinear optical devices, fiber-optic communications, and photonic switching and computing. Included are such vital topics as:
* Generation of coherent light by lasers, and incoherent light by luminescence sources such as light-emitting diodes
* Transmission of light through optical components (lenses, apertures, and imaging systems), waveguides, and fibers
* Modulation, switching, and scanning of light through the use of electrically, acoustically, and optically controlled devices
* Amplification and frequency conversion of light by the use of wave interactions in nonlinear materials Detection of light by means of semiconductor photodetectors
Each chapter contains summaries, highlighted equations, problem sets and exercises, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest, and appendices summarize the properties of one- and two-dimensional Fourier transforms, linear-systems theory, and modes of linear systems.
An Instructor’s Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

Description: System administration is about the design, running and maintenance of human-computer systems. Examples of human-computer systems include business enterprises, service institutions and any extensive machinery that is operated by, or interacts with human beings. System administration is often thought of as the technological side of a system: the architecture, construction and optimization of the collaborating parts, but it also occasionally touches on softer factors such as user assistance (help desks), ethical considerations in deploying a system, and the larger implications of its design for others who come into contact with it.

Description: This book focuses on a prototype of creative causal processes termed BIOS and how the concept can be applied to the physical world, in medicine and in social science. This book presents methods for identifying creative features in empirical data; studies showing biotic patterns in physical, biological, and economic processes; mathematical models of bipolar (positive and negative) feedback that generate biotic patterns. These studies support the hypothesis that natural processes are creative (not determined) and causal (not random) and that bipolar feedback plays a major role in their evolution. Simple processes precede, coexist, constitute and surround the complex systems they generate (priority of the simple). In turn, complex processes feedback and transform simpler ones (supremacy of the complex).

Description: Although there are many advanced and specialized texts and handbooks on algorithms, until now there was no book that focused exclusively on the wide variety of data structures that have been reported in the literature. The Handbook of Data Structures and Applications responds to the needs of students, professionals, and researchers who need a mainstream reference on data structures by providing a comprehensive survey of data structures of various types. Divided into seven parts, the text begins with a review of introductory material, followed by a discussion of well-known classes of data structures, Priority Queues, Dictionary Structures, and Multidimensional structures. The editors next analyze miscellaneous data structures, which are well-known structures that elude easy classification. The book then addresses mechanisms and tools that were developed to facilitate the use of data structures in real programs. It concludes with an examination of the applications of data structures. The Handbook is invaluable in suggesting new ideas for research in data structures, and for revealing application contexts in which they can be deployed. Practitioners devising algorithms will gain insight into organizing data, allowing them to solve algorithmic problems more efficiently.

Hardbound. This revised and updated edition of a book first published in 1972 has kept the general features of the first edition but as could be expected after two decades there are also substantial differences. For instance optimal design has been completely deleted as the developments in this field have been so great that it warrants a book in itself. The fundamental concepts based on Drucker's postulate rather than those of Prager's assumptions function have been introduced. Problems of cyclic loading have been given some more extensive treatment, both in the general theory and in applications. General indications and references have been added for reinforced concrete plates and shells. A general presentation of the yield condition for both plates and shells has been included and the section on the influence of axial force in plates has been almost re-written. Finally, a chapter has been added exclusively devoted to the numerical approach to limit load

- William A. Donovan, Chicago P.L.

Gangs of America: The Rise of Corporate Power and the Disabling of Democracy
Berrett-Koehler Publishers (July 2003) | 300 pages | ISBN-10: 1576752607 | 1 Mb
Nace nurtured Peachpit Press from a home-based operation, writing and publishing computer guides, to a business worthy of acquisition by the Pearson conglomerate. The experience inspired him to study the nature of corporate power. He offers a breezy summary of the legal history surrounding the formation of corporations and the parameters of their power, putting an anti-corporate spin on the American Revolution and discussing how the early republic limited corporate power by enabling state governments to issue restrictive charters. But the tight controls didn't remain in place: after the Supreme Court's decision in an 1886 case involving the Santa Clara Railroad, corporations were assumed to be the legal equivalent of people entitled to equal protection under the law and, in subsequent cases, were guaranteed a growing range of constitutional rights. One of Nace's central arguments is that Santa Clara doesn't mean what everybody thinks it means: the original decision doesn't take any stand on whether corporations have constitutional rights; the question comes up in a subsequent version of the decision, but the Chief Justice acts as if it had been resolved in earlier decisions. Although Nace blames the Court's reporter for the shift in emphasis, he illustrates how another justice, Stephen Field, was already buttressing politicians' and financial titans' efforts to eliminate all restraints on corporate power, making their legal supremacy inevitable. Later chapters examine how corporations continue to wield their influence to prevent the government from regulating them too closely, but while the book offers plenty of details about the problem's existence and deftly introduces it, it offers little more than generalities about where to go from there.

Modern Processor Design: Fundamentals of Superscalar Processors is an exciting new first edition from John Shen of Carnegie Mellon University & Intel and Mikko Lipasti of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This book brings together the numerous microarchitectural techniques for harvesting more instruction-level parallelism (ILP) to achieve better processor performance that have been proposed and implemented in real machines. Other advanced techniques from recent research efforts that extend beyond ILP to exploit thread-level parallelism (TLP) are also compiled in this book. All of these techniques, as well as the foundational principles behind them, are organized and presented within a clear framework that allows for ease of comprehension.
This text is intended for an advanced computer architecture course or a course in superscalar processor design. It is written at a level appropriate for senior or first year graduate level students, and can be used by professionals as well.

Analyzing the Grammar of English
Richard V. Teschner, Eston Evans “Analyzing the Grammar of English "
Georgetown University Press; 3 edition (May 15, 2007) | ISBN: 158901166X | 232 pages | PDF | 2,2 Mb Analyzing the Grammar of English offers a descriptive analysis of the indispensable elements of English grammar. Designed to be covered in one semester, this textbook starts from scratch and takes nothing for granted beyond a reading and speaking knowledge of English. Extensively revised to function better in skills-building classes, it includes more interspersed exercises that promptly test what is taught, simplified and clarified explanations, greatly expanded and more diverse activities, and a new glossary of over 200 technical terms.
Analyzing the Grammar of English, Third Edition is the only English grammar to view the sentence as a strictly punctuational constuct—anything that begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, a question mark, an exclamation mark, or three dots—rather than a syntactic one, and to load, in consequence, all the necessary syntactic analysis onto the clause and its constituents.

Weeds in the Garden of Words: Further Observations on the Tangled History of the English
Kate Burridge “Weeds in the Garden of Words: Further Observations on the Tangled History of the English "
Cambridge University Press (June 20, 2005) | ISBN: 0521618231 | PDF | 206 pages | 1,7 Mb Kate Burridge follows the international success of Blooming English with another entertaining excursion into the ever-changing nature of the complex and captivating English language. If language is a glorious garden, filled with exotic hybrids as well as traditional heritage specimens, then weeds will also thrive on its fertile grounds. Linguistic weeds may be defined as pronunciations or constructions that are no longer used. For example, Burridge points out how "aint" or double negatives were at one time quite acceptable in everyday speaking and writing but are now classified as "weeds" that should no longer have a place in our vocabulary. And, as she so deftly accomplished in Blooming English, Burridge goes on here to further celebrate our capacity to play with language, and to examine the ways we use it: in slang and jargon, swearing, speaking the unspeakable, or concealing unpleasant or inconvenient facts. In this new volume she gives us another fun and informative work for enjoyable browsing; for discovering intriguing trivia about language, history, and social customs; and for employing as a peerless weapon in word games. Kate Burridge is the Chair of Linguistics at Monash University and a regular presenter of segments on the Australian Broadcast Company.

The Language and Reality of Time
Thomas Sattig "The Language and Reality of Time"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2006-06-19 | ISBN:0199279527 | 240 pages | PDF | 2,1 Mb Thomas Sattig's book develops a comprehensive framework for doing philosophy of time. He brings together a variety of different perspectives, linking our ordinary conception of time with the physicist's conception, and linking questions about time addressed in metaphysics with questions addressed in the philosophy of language. Within this framework, Sattig explores the temporal dimension of the material world in relation to the temporal dimension of our ordinary discourse about the world. The discussion is centred around the dispute between three-dimensionalists and four-dimensionalists about whether the temporal profile of ordinary objects mirrors their spatial profile. Are ordinary objects extended in time in the same way in which they are extended in space? Do they have temporal as well as spatial parts? Four-dimensionalists say 'yes', three-dimensionalists say 'no'. Sattig develops an original three-dimensionalist picture of the material world, and argues that this picture is preferable to its four-dimensionalists rivals if ordinary thought and talk are taken seriously. Among the issues that Sattig discusses are the metaphysics of persistence, change, composition, location, coincidence, and relativity; the ontology of past, present, and future; and the semantics of predication, tense, temporal modifiers, and sortal terms.

The Voice of Knowledge : A Practical Guide to Inner Peace (Toltec Wisdom)
By Don Miguel Ruiz, Janet Mills
As little children we know how to live in the moment and be completely authentic. But then something damaging happens to us, according to author Don Miguel Ruiz: we are given "knowledge" about how to live in the world. Parents tell us how to behave in order to be a "good" boy or girl. Teachers tell us what it takes to be a "winner" or a "successful" adult. This collective "voice of knowledge" is not only false--it is often poisonous, explains Ruiz, bestselling author of The Four Agreements.

Foundations of Cryptography: Volume 1, Basic Tools
By Oded Goldreich | 392 pages | PDF | 2.4 Mb
Cryptography is concerned with the conceptualization, definition and construction of computing systems that address security concerns. This book presents a rigorous and systematic treatment of the foundational issues: defining cryptographic tasks and solving new cryptographic problems using existing tools. It focuses on the basic mathematical tools: computational difficulty (one-way functions), pseudorandomness and zero-knowledge proofs. Rather than describing ad-hoc approaches, this book emphasizes the clarification of fundamental concepts and the demonstration of the feasibility of solving cryptographic problems. It is suitable for use in a graduate course on cryptography and as a reference book for experts.

Principles of Computer Graphics: Theory and Practice Using OpenGL and Maya
296 pages | May 6, 2005 | PDF | 19 Mb
Although computer graphics games and animations have been popular for more than a decade, recently personal computers evolved to support real-time, realistic-looking interactive games. OpenGL, a technology standard to develop CG applications, has had incredible momentum in both the professional and consumer markets. Once only the domain of production houses, OpenGL has grown to be the standard for graphics programming on all platforms, personal computers, and workstations. Now more than ever, people are eager to learn about what it takes to make such productions, and how they can be a part of them. Current literature on how to make movies/games focus more on the technology (OpenGL, DirectX, etc) and their APIs rather than on the principles of computer graphics.

State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III is a book by Bob Woodward, originally due to be published October 2, 2006 (but unexpectedly released two days early by the publisher due to demand), that examines how the George W. Bush administration mismanaged the Iraq War after the 2003 invasion.It follows Woodward's previous books on the Bush administration, Bush at War and Plan of Attack. Based on interviews with a number of people in the Bush administration (although not with President Bush) the book makes a number of allegations about the administration.
Newsweek magazine presented a special excerpt of the book. Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas and Senior White House Correspondent Richard Wolffe reported on the potential fallout for Bush and U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and analyzed the administration's response.

Academic Press | ISBN: 0123742889 | 4 ed (January 22, 2008) | 592 pages | PDF | 4.2 MB
The extensive additions, and the inclusion of a new chapter, has made this classic work by Jeffrey, now joined by co-author Dr. H.H. Dai, an even more essential reference for researchers and students in applied mathematics, engineering, and physics. It provides quick access to important formulas, relationships between functions, and mathematical techniques that range from matrix theory and integrals of commonly occurring functions to vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, special functions, Fourier series, orthogonal polynomials, and Laplace and Fourier transforms. During the preparation of this edition full advantage was taken of the recently updated seventh edition of Gradshteyn and Ryzhiks Table of Integrals, Series, and Products and other important reference works. Suggestions from users of the third edition of the Handbook have resulted in the expansion of many sections, and because of the relevance to boundary value problems for the Laplace equation in the plane, a new chapter on conformal mapping, has been added, complete with an atlas of useful mappings.

This book is the first systematic account of the syntax and semantics of names. Drawing on work in onomastics, philosophy, and linguistics John Anderson examines the distribution and subcategorization of names within a framework of syntactic categories, and considers how the morphosyntactic behaviour of names connects to their semantic roles. He argues that names occur in two basic circumstances: one involving vocatives and their use in naming predications, where they are not definite; the other their use as arguments of predicators, where they are definite. This division is discussed in relation to English, French, Greek, and Seri, and a range of other languages. Professor Anderson reveals that the semantic status of names, including prototypicality, is crucial to understanding their morphosyntax and role in derivational relationships. He shows that semantically coherent subsets of names, such as those referring to people and places, are characterized by morphosyntactic properties which may vary from language to language. His original and important investigation will appeal to scholars and advanced students of linguistics and philosophy.

However, understanding these principles is the key to dealing with any technology API. The aim of “Principles of Computer Graphics and OpenGL” is to teach readers the principles of computer graphics. Hands-on examples developed in OpenGL illustrate the key concepts, and readers develop a professional animation, following traditional processes used in production houses. By the end of the book, readers will be experts in the principles of computer graphics and OpenGL. They will be able to develop their own professional quality games via the same approach used in production houses.

John J. Amoss, Dan Minoli “Handbook of IPv4 to IPv6 Transition: Methodologies for Institutional and Corporate Networks " AUERBACH (December 6, 2007) | ISBN: 0849385164 | PDF | 248 pages | 3,5 Mb
In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office recommended that all agencies begin planning a coherent transition to IPv6. IPv6 will solve the problem of limited IP addresses and improve internetworking capabilities. This promising protocol is gaining momentum and it is only a matter of time before the transition will have to occur globally. The problem is that during the three-to-six year transition period, IPv6 and its predecessor, IPv4, will have to successfully coexist in order to ensure service continuity.
Not only federal agencies, but corporations and institutions must start planning the transition to IPv6 now to maintain the operation, security, and interoperability of their networks.
The implementation of IPv6 is essential to the continued growth of the internet and the development of new applications. The Handbook of IPv4 to IPv6 Transition Methodologies provides a wealth of best practices and procedures that will help corporations plan and implement a smooth transition to IPv6.

Throughout banking, mathematical techniques are used. Some of these are within software products or models; mathematicians use others to analyse data. The current literature on the subject is either very basic or very advanced.
The Mathematics of Banking offers an intermediate guide to the various techniques used in the industry, and a consideration of how each one should be approached. Written in a practical style, it will enable readers to quickly appreciate the purpose of the techniques and, through illustrations, see how they can be applied in practice. Coverage is extensive and includes techniques such as VaR analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, extreme value theory, variance and many others.

This book integrates a historical and linguistic exploration of world English, documenting the emergence of the language as a contested site of linguistic encounters. It revises the understanding of English spread during the colonial period, emphasizing the agency of non-mother-tongue English speakers. The book contends that English owes its existence as a world language in large part to the struggle against imperialism but not to imperialism alone. To explain English varieties, the book introduces a new linguistic model of second language acquisition by speech communities: macroacquisition.
